With a legacy that began in the 19th Century, the
University of Alabama boasts one of college football's finest
traditions. Home to Lindy's SEC Coach of the 20th Century (Paul W.
Bryant), the SEC Team of the 20th Century (the 1979 Crimson Tide), and
seven first-team SEC Century Team members, the Tide has won 12 National
Championships, and 21 Southeastern Conference Championship. The
greatest coach in Tide history, Paul William Bryant, gave Alabama 25 years
of memories, including 232 wins against a mere 46 losses and 9 ties.
Bryant coached the Tide to 6 National Championship, 13 SEC titles, and 24
consecutive bowl games. Bryant's career ended with 323 wins overall,
85 losses, and 17 ties. Gene Stallings, the Tide mentor from
1990-96, led Alabama it's most recent National Championship, in
1992. That year, the Tide also won the first of it's two SEC
Championships of the 1990s. Mike DuBose, overcame off-seasons
scandals and a heartbreaking last-second loss to Louisiana Tech to return
Alabama to the elite ranks of Southeastern Conference Champions in the
105th season of football at The University of Alabama, in 1999. The
Tide won its second SEC Championship of the 1990s with a 34-7 victory over
Florida, the second win over the Gators in 1999. Earlier that
season, Alabama had handed Florida its first loss in Gainesville in seven
years. DuBose would be dismissed just a year later, however,
following the second worst season in Alabama football history.
Alabama's current head coach, Dennis Franchione, hopes to repeat a
rebuilding feat he's done at nearly every stop along his coaching
career.
